Penguin Needs to be Put on Ice

By Jason Menard

I don’t know if Matt Cooke is a bad man, an exceedingly stupid man, a phenomenally reckless man, or a combination of all three.

All I know is that he’s a man that should be on very thin ice in terms of continuing NHL employment. And that his current employer should be the one to toss him out first before the league’s administrators get to him. Continue reading

Time to Stop Swimming Upstream and Dam the Damn School Boards

By Jay Menard

I was going to ask ‘How did we all let it get away from us?’ but the answer’s painfully clear: it’s apathy. So the next question has to be, “If we’re all on board and want to go in the same direction, why can’t we just start rowing that way?”

But that’s the problem with apathy. It’s a fast-moving current – and once it’s moving against you, it’s very hard to paddle upstream. Continue reading

E-Gads — Lamenting a Hyphen’s Loss

By Jason Menard

Hope you’re enjoying your uhmail.

As you can see, I’m not enamoured with the Associated Press’ decision last week to drop the hyphen out of the term e-mail. Generally, I’m all in favour of the modernization of language and I’m by no means a prescriptive grammarian.

But I think the AP – and the majority of my colleagues who support this move – got this one wrong. Continue reading

Head Shots Knocking the Fun Out of the Game

By Jason Menard

It’s getting harder and harder to be a fan of the NHL these days. And with the league’s commissioner adding similar hubris to his Napoleonic resemblance, it’s hard to see how the league is going to change for the better of its own volition before it’s compelled to by sending one of its players to the morgue.

I never thought I’d be cheering an airline, but I have to applaud Air Canada for its stand against the league’s continuing to turn if not a blind eye, certainly an exceptionally myopic on, on the issue of head injuries. Following the league’s inaction in the aftermath of the ax Pacioretty hit, Air Canada’s director of marketing/communication Denis Vandal, sent a letter to the league demanding immediate and serious actions on this issue. Winnipeg Coaches Put Sportsmanship on Ice

By Jason Menard

A group of Manitoban hockey coaches have been put on ice following a display of exceedingly poor sportsmanship. But while the issue has heated up discussion on fair play in sport, unfortunately it’s the kids who are getting frozen out.

Last week the coaches of Westwood Collegiate, participants in the Winnipeg High School Hockey League, pulled their goalie during a game against College Jeanne Sauve. Normally, this is a sound strategy and has been part of the game forever. Normally, however, your team’s not ahead by a goal when your netminder heads to the bench. Continue reading
