A Holiday How-To Guide to Avoid Becoming a Ho-Ho-Hosebag

Too much of a good thing can ruin any experience. The celebration of the Christmas holidays can be saccharine enough by its very nature, but our more-is-better mentality can leave you feeling like you’re in a diabetic coma before the first gift gets unwrapped.

Today, at work, the cafeteria was decorated for the Christmas season. There’s a tree in the corner, garland abounds, and it’s a pre-winter wonderland. Now there is a reason, as we’re starting a charitable holiday drive, but regardless of the motivation, Nov. 15th is a little early to start getting in the festive mood.

NHL All-Star Changes Represent All-Star Ingenuity

Dare I say it? The NHL is fast becoming the most innovative major sports league in North America, as evidenced by their brilliant move to add some excitement to the league’s annual all-star game by taking it back to its roots.

First off, it’s easy to be innovative when you’re league is a distant 13th in the big four. We, in Canada, like to consider hockey on par with the big boys: Major League Baseball, the National Football League, and the National Basketball Association. US Labour Board Says You Can Criticize Your Boss On-line; But Should You?

Just over two months ago, I wrote about how poor choices when using Facebook could prevent you from getting a job in the future. And while that may be true, a landmark case in the U.S. may define whether or not what you say on Facebook could get you fired from the one you already have!

The story in question is about a Connecticut emergency medical technician who took to the Internet via Facebook to criticize her supervisor. Long story short, she was fired and now the National Labor Relations Board in the U.S. said that the firing was illegal as it violated the EMT’s First Amendment rights. Continue reading →

Publication Takes a Pie to the Face Over Editor’s Alleged Rant

While the Internet has made it easier for people all around the world to share their thoughts with the world, it’s also proven the value of learning those basic journalistic that those of us who have written for traditional media learned long ago.

The latest example of the need for stricter attention to these journalistic ideals comes from, unfortunately, a so-called editor who combined a healthy disregard for copyright with an unhealthy level of hubris that has inflicted an immense amount of damage for her publication. Continue reading →

True innovation in sports? Overrated. In fact, it’s safe to say that once a winning formula’s been discovered, most teams are more than willing to drink the Kool-Aid.
